Back to Death Valley

05/04/08 - Members of the Southern California Tacoma club and their guests returned to Death Valley National Park to run the Slate Range Trail followed by running Goler Wash to Butte Valley. Perfect weather and great scenery for the entire trip with stops along Panamint Dry Lake  Bed, the Keystone Mine and Barker Ranch (for lunch) on the way up through Mengle Pass to Butte Valley. Attendees camped in and around the Stone Cabin and enjoyed the fantastic view of Butte Valley.  In the morning half of the group headed back out Goler while the other half continued on to Warm Springs to the West Side Road and out via Shoshone (with the required stop at China ranch for date shakes).

There was much discussion of returning to Death Valley National Park, perhaps  to run up to Cerro Gordo or to South Park Loop in the near future.  Death Valley National Park makes one want to keep coming back and SCTC will be in Death Valley National Park soon!

SCTC El Paso Run

IMG_8101.JPG03/29 – 30/2008 - The Southern California Tacoma Club enjoyed great spring weather and good times in the El Paso Mountains over the weekend, completing another successful run.  The El Paso Mountains are north of the city of Mojave. The area is beautiful, with colors of rock ranging from dark brown to pink, eroded canyons, dry waterfalls and high hills with endless views. The area also has a long mining history so there is plenty to go see!  The Club checked out the Old Dutch Cleanser Mine, Burro Schmidt’s Tunnel (caretaker Jose Poblano gave us an excellent tour), Bickle’s Camp, all the trails in between and then head out to camp near the old Opal Mines. The next day we exited via Last Chance. A few of us went on to Randsburg to check out the “Living Ghost Town” and enjoy a drink at an over 100 year old soda fountain!

Worth mentioning is a group that is trying to preserve the historic sites in and around Last chance canyon, The Friends of Last chance Canyon. They have a goal of helping to protect nearby El Paso Mountains area sites for the public to view and enjoy today and into the future.  Check out their web site and make a donation here:

Calico Cleanup 2008

IMG_7795.JPG02/15-16/08 – The Southern California Tacoma Club participated in the Second Annual Calico Cleanup, and event that draws hundreds or participants to work with the BLM to clean up one of Southern California’s premier wheeling spots.  Our club chose two areas to clean and went to work, removing trash and debris and hauling them to dumpsters provided by the event.

When not cleaning the canyons and hills, some of the club took to the trails, running Odessa and Doran while in the area for the weekend.  Great trails and a very good time with perfect weather and surprisingly uncrowded trails.

The Calico Cleanup itself was very well run, a fun and important event allowing the off road community to contribute in a direct and positive way to the betterment of an area we all enjoy. The club looks forward to future participation and fun!

First Annual Meet N’ Greet!

02/02/08 – The club met for our First Annual Meet N’ Greet at our Vice President Mike’s house in San Bernardino, The event was planned by the team, lead by our Club Treasurer, Jeremy.  The pot luck style event was all Mexican food and the event included some wrenching as members worked on various projects on their rigs.

The club also had a club meeting and voted in two new members who’d completed their three runs and three meetings with the group, Curtis and Lance. Both will make great additions to our club and help us continue the fun!

It was not all work at the Meet N’ Greet! There was a lot of joking and fun as there always is. However a few rigs got things fixed and everyone had a great time from morning until late evening. A big thank you goes out to Jeremy and Mike for putting this together.

A short video from the event is here (24 MB): http://www.socaltaco.com/images/displayimage.php?pos=-1051
